The scheme comprises the conversion of a unique collection of derelict city centre Grade II Listed Quaker school buildings into a series of duplex apartments, together with the construction of a new four storey block accommodating two commercial units, cafe / bar and apartments.

The design for the conversion and refurbishment respects the existing building fabric and embraces and enhances the special architectural features of the existing building, whilst also responding to the complex juxtaposition of the existing key buildings and strategic insertion of  new contemporary elements.

After an exhaustive design, research and development stage, the BBLB design evolved into a series of selective demolitions with the main school buildings of particular architectural merit being converted into a collection of buildings with new courtyards and private gardens. The team worked closely with the local planning and conservation officers throughout the project.

The new building responds to it’s sensitive setting, in particular the adjacent synagogue, whilst providing a striking corner building on this prominent city centre site.
