Floral Hall
Stoke-on-Trent
Stoke City Council
Built in 1910, the Floral Hall in Tunstall was dilapidated and fire damaged when Stoke on Trent City Council targeted it for restoration. The building, which is in a conservation area, sits in Tunstall Park also known as Victoria Park which is one of the city’s heritage parks and is Grade II listed. Floral Hall has now been beautifully restored and will house the community hall that is relocating from the town centre.
It is now the focal point for local community events including private hire for social events and the main hall for local club facilities. We used a sustainable approach where possible including the use of natural daylight and self closing / spray taps, low flush toilets and condensing boilers. The security of the community centre was an important part of our design considerations. ‘Secured by design’ solutions included a clearly defined entrance clearly identified from each area of the site, textured render to deter graffiti, and discrete roller shutters that help to retain the character of the existing building.
The building was adapted to ensure it was all inclusive for the community and fully compliant with DDA requirements. The architecture of the existing building has been retained and enhanced where possible, materials used are sympathetic to the existing historic building with a modern approach. BBLB worked with Carillion, the design team and the Council to restore Floral Hall and enable the local community to once again benefit from the facilities within.
